The Optical Spectrograph and InfraRed Imager System (OSIRIS) is a Canadian instrument on the Swedish/Canadian/Finnish/French Odin satellite orbiting the Earth since February 2001 in a polar, near-terminator and sun-synchronous orbit. OSIRIS scans the Earth's limb and takes limb radiance spectra between 280 and 800 nm with about 1 nm resolution. Stratospheric ozone density profiles between 15 and 40 km were retrieved from OSIRIS limb scans applying a method that closely follows Flittner et al. (GRL, 27, 2061) [2000]. The technique is based on the analysis of normalized and paired limb radiance profiles in the centre and the wings of the Chappuis-Wulf absorption bands of ozone, and employs a non-linear Newtonian iteration version of Optimal Estimation coupled with the pseudo-spherical multiple scattering radiative transfer model LIMBTRAN. Different preliminary results including stratospheric ozone fields for northern hemisphere summer, the antarctic ozone hole, as well as preliminary validation results of OSIRIS stratospheric ozone columns and profiles will be presented. The preliminary results indicate that limb scatter measurements combined with state-of-the-art RT models present a powerful and reliable technique to remotely sense stratospheric ozone with high accuracy and high vertical resolution on a global scale and on a daily basis.
