Mars Odyssey entered the mapping configuration on Feb 18, 02, during Martian northern winter. The initial data from the Los Alamos National Laboratory Neutron Spectrometer (NS) component of the Gamma Ray Subsystem on Odyssey suggests that the south polar regions of Mars may contain significant amounts of near surface hydrogen. Early estimates from the epithermal (0.4 eV < E < 600 keV) neutrons measured by the Odyssey NS suggest that the hydrogen in the southern hemisphere has a northern boundary that ranges from about -65 to -45 degrees latitude, and the boundary is a smooth function of longitude. In the study presented here, data in this region from the NS near northern vernal equinox (Ls = 0) will be combined with end-to-end simulations to estimate the weight fraction of hydrogen in the soil. The neutron distribution functions at the top of the Martian atmosphere are obtained for the assumed Martian soil and atmosphere compositions using Monte Carlo neutron transport codes, which also calculate the NS efficiency as a function of incident neutron velocity. In the simulation, the accessible phase space for neutron orbits in the Martian gravitational field that connect the NS on Odyssey and the ground is mapped. Count rates in the NS detectors are calculated, and the results are compared with the onboard measurements.
