A peak in zonal-mean wave activity occurs in the tropics in numerous data sets that observe short vertical scale temperature perturbations in the lower stratosphere. These observations include Global Positioning System occultation data (GPS/MET), radiosonde data, and data from the CRISTA (Cryogenic Infrared Spectrometers and Telescopes for the Atmosphere) experiments flown on the Space Shuttle. These short vertical scale perturbations have been interpreted as low frequency inertia-gravity waves and Kelvin waves. Such waves can play a role in stratosphere-troposphere exchange and dehydration of the stratosphere through mixing effects and the formation of cirrus clouds. These waves also play a role in driving the quasibiennial oscillation (QBO) in the stratospheric zonal winds. We will summarize what has been inferred about the properties of the waves in these observations, their latitudinal and vertical variations, and the nature of the sources that generate them. We will also present results of a model study of wave propagation and dissipation constrained by the observations to infer their likely role in driving the QBO.
