We investigate the energy dependence of the astrophysical S_17 factor for the reaction ^7Be(p,γ)^8B. Near the Gamow energy ~ 20 keV, the S_17 factor is dominated by a simple pole arising from the subthreshold ^8B ground state. Below 400 keV the energy dependence is constrained by the data for the elastic scattering of low energy neutrons from ^7Li. Above that energy nuclear distortion of the wave function of the incident proton introduces a significant model dependence. This is particularly important for the s-wave contribution. We discuss the energy dependence in relation to a simple one-body model, and compare our results to other model calculations.
