Coronal mass ejections are often associated with interplanetary magnetic clouds, whose fields are regularly probed with sensitive magnetometers. The measurements reveal that magnetic cloud fields are helical, and each cloud carries helicity away from the sun. There is no known mechanism for returning helicity to the sun. This talk will survey the possible solar sources of magnetic helicity. Included are fieldline footpoint motions, effects of Coriolis forces, effects of convection, shear associated with differential rotation, and, of course, the internal dynamo. Besides the survey of possible mechanisms for helicity generation, we will consider the global view of the flow of helicity from the sun into interplanetary space.
