An investigation of the internal structure of prominences appearing as twisted tubes is presented on the basis of a sample encompassing 15 stable and 13 eruptive prominences, the exposing patterns of which possibly reflect a helical configuration. The equivalent pitch angles (theta) of twisted fine structure features were measured. In some cases the evolution of the internal structure was followed and 49 measurements of theta were performed. The results are presented in a plane correlating theta and the normalized prominence height. The eruptive prominences were found to occupy the region characterized by theta greater than 50 deg and h greater than 0.8 d, where h and d are the prominence height and the footpoint half-separation, respectively. All prominences characterized by h less than 0.6 d or by theta less than 35 deg were stable. This finding is in good agreement with an order-of-magnitude treatment of the forces acting in a curved magnetic tube anchored at both ends in the photosphere.
