The satellite derived free-air anomaly over the Himalayas in India is positive, bordered on the south by a negative. The positive free-air anomaly is so strong that it deceptively indicates isostatic undercompensation of the Himalayas, implying a thinner crust below than is normally expected for their elevation range. The paper explains that one should not consider isolated anomalies over a structure, but the average of all the anomaly values produced by the source, while determining the level of isostatic compensation. The average anomaly over the Himalayas does not put the often cited theory of overcompensation into any dispute.
