An effort is made to formulate a theoretical foundation for methods which obtain the orbital parameters of the Uranian rings by fitting precessing inclined ellipses with constant elliptic elements and precession rates onto ring-occultation data. It is shown that ring shapes and evolution are best described in terms of epicyclic elements that most nearly approximate the geometric elements obtained from ring occultation data. It is also suggested that epicyclic elements be used in place of elliptic elements in treatments of ring problems, in order to improve data fits and preclude theoretical inconsistencies.
