The Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS) will consist of seven identical Cherenkov telescopes with 80 m separation. The telescopes are similar to the Whipple 10 m Atmospheric Cherenkov Imaging Telescope but with improved optics, improved signal processing electronics and improved calibration devices. The project is entering the construction stage, and a prototype telescope should be completed by October 2003. In the next phase, a four-telescope array will be constructed which should be operating in 2006. The full array will have an energy threshold of less than 100 GeV, an energy resolution better than 15%, an angular resolution of 0.09 degree at 100 GeV and a sensitivity of 15 mCrab in 50 hours at 100 GeV. With these capabilities, VERITAS should significantly enrich the catalog of high-energy gamma-ray sources and provide new elements in our understanding of the most extreme processes at play in the universe.
