Inflationary universe models and the cosmic string theory provide two district ways to explain the origin of inhomogeneities in the universe on large scales. The two mechanisms for the origin of galaxies and clusters of galaxies are summarized and compared, and some recent results on galaxy formation with hot dark matter and cosmic stings are mentioned.
