Since about 1971, a programme of coordinated photometric and spectroscopic observations of selected double-lined eclipsing binary systems has been carried out. The main aim of the programme is to use suitably detached binary systems as a tool to determine very accurately the masses, radii, and temperatures of stars which can be assumed to be representative of normal, single stars.
