We present the basics of microlensing and give an overview of the results obtained so far. In particular, the microlensing events found towards the Large Magellanic Cloud suggest that about 20% of the galactic halo dark matter is in the form of MACHOs (Massive Astrophysical Compact Halo Objects). The remaining dark matter fraction could, at least partially, be made of cold molecular clouds (mainly of H2). .
