The Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect is an almost distance-independent measure of electron pressure from hot regions in the Universe. This review describes some of the effect's uses as a cosmological probe, including the measurements of the Hubble constant, the baryonic mass fraction in clusters of galaxies, and the velocities of clusters. The next generation of Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect instruments will permit true blind surveys for the effect, providing new information on cosmological parameters and cluster formation. .
