The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) provides us with a window on the early universe through which we are starting to see a great deal of detail. The recent BOOMERANG and MAXIMA results have given the first high-resolution wide-area maps of CMB fluctuations, and along with them the first primordial power spectra to probe both the first and second Doppler peaks simultaneously. Shortly, interferometer experiments will be probing further into the secondary peaks, either resolving current puzzles as regards apparent clashes with the standard cosmological models (particularly nucleosynthesis), or creating fresh difficulties. These are exciting times in CMB astronomy and cosmology, and the aim of this contribution is to give some background to the observational side of CMB work. Experimental techniques and contaminants are discussed, and then brief details are given of the recent experiments which are starting to provide the first accurate measurements of the power spectrum. The implications for cosmological models are discussed, and a survey given of some ongoing and future developments, including balloons and satellite missions, with an emphasis on CMB interferometers. .
