A new expression for the baryon number of a cold star is derived within the framework of general relativity. The expression is analogous to the Tolman mass formula and when combined with it yields a relation between the mass, the baryon number, the surface red-shift, and the ratio between the volume averages of the pressure and the energy density. Some immediate implications of this relation are mentioned.
