A simple explanation for the superrotation of the Venusian atmosphere is offered in the framework of an axisymmetric convection-diffusion model for the zonal angular momentum. High velocities of the zonal motion are maintained by a diffusive flux generated by nonzonal unsteady motions which tend to bring the atmosphere into a regime of rigid-body rotation. Here, the angular momentum transferred by meridional circulation tends to concentrate in the upper part of the atmosphere. Numerical solutions confirm that, depending on the relation of the meridional-circulation velocity and the viscosity coefficients, a steady angular-momentum balance can be realized for arbitrarily strong superrotation.
