Undriven reconnection in a system with free boundaries was analyzed by numerical solutions of the compressible MHD equations. The general approach is similar to that described by Ugai and Tsuda (1977, 1979), in that magnetic reconnection is set up by a localized resistivity enhancement in an isolated current sheet; however, by using a system length which is large compared to the current sheet thickness, the reconnection process could be followed into a quasi-steady state. The relationships between the quasi-steady reconnection rate and the imposed magnitude and spacial distribution of the resistivity were investigated.
