Molecular clouds have always been difficult to study in the ultraviolet because of the very high extinction levels. For this proposal, target stars have been selected on the basis of optical data to show very strong molecular lines, while still being bright enough to be accessible to the IUE in the high dispersion mode. Good quality high dispersion data will be analyzed to determine atomic and molecular abundances within the cloud. A new technique for reducing fixed-pattern noise in the IUE detector will be used for some of the brighter stars in the study. Low dispersion data will also be taken to determine the grain extinction properties, so that correlations among depletions, chemical activity, and grain properties can be tested. The results will provide a valuable insight into the physical conditions in dark clouds.
