Two 16 hour periods (a Vilspa shift and a US1 shift back to back) plus a third US1 shift are requested in order to study changes in the hot plasma portion of the Io torus. Monitoring of the torus has been under way since the Voyager 1 encounter with Jupiter in March 1979. Recent observations show a significant decrease in emissions from the Io torus concurrent with the decrease in solar activity associated with the solar cycle; this change in the torus properties is in contradiction to present ideas in which the solar plasma is not expected to play a major role. The IUE spectra will be used to determine if this trend continues with decreasing solar activity and also to study variations in the charge state balance and electron temperature leading to information on changes in the confinement time. Neutral emissions in the vicinity of Io will provide direct estimates of the mass injection rate.
