The IUE satellite will be used to study the ultraviolet spectra of R and N-type carbon stars, which encompass the luminosity range from giants to supergiants, in order to understand the outer layers of three objects. We propose to concentrate on two aspects of this problem: (1) highdispersion studies of the brightest R stars and (2) the variation with time of the spectrum of the irregular variable TX Psc. High dispersion observations in the long wavelength region of IUE will be obtained for the brightest R stars and used to identify the spectral features in the 2600-3200A range. The spectra will be compared to those of oxygen-rich stars with similar temperatures to ascertain the effects of chemical peculiarities in the outer atmospheres of carbon stars. We intend to obtain spectra of all different population and luminosity types of early R stars and of one late R star -- The only stars bright enough to allow high-dispersion IUE spectroscopy. Detailed models will be constructed of the outer atmospheres of these stars, based on existing photospheric models of Johnson and coworkers, to measure quantitatively the physical conditions in their upper photospheres and chromospheres. We will continue to observe TX Psc to determine the range of variation in its chromospheric emission and to see how this is related to changes in the ultraviolet continuum and optical brightness. Again, detailed chromospheric models will be used as the basis of comparison.
