We propose to use IUE to search for an ultraviolet marker for the extended material which causes the intense infrared emission found by IRAS around the nearby star Vega (alpha Lyr). These observations will test for fluorescence from gas phase molecules and atoms found in cometary halos, H2, 0II, 00, OI and CI, as well as reflection from particulate material. Once an UV marker is established, it can be used to probe the geometry and physical condition of the emitting material. This source is expected to be very faint in the UV, so anticipated exposure times are long.
