We propose to continue our long-term program of studying the far ultraviolet spectra of high redshift quasars. our target list consists of three PG quasars, all with V ~16.0 and redshifts between 1.1 and 1.5. The observations are prompted by three scientific objectives. The first is to expand our survey for optically thick Lyman edge absorption systems to extend our study of intervening galactic halo regions at high redshift. Our sample to date has yielded a different range of associated C IV and Mg II column densities from those found in optical absorptionline surveys. Secondly, the objects at redshift 1 are less subject to optically thin Lyman continuum absorption distributed along the line of sight, so that more reliable inferences may be drawn about the intrinsic emitted continuum than in their higher redshift counterparts. We will use Malkan's fitting technique to derive black hole masses and accretion rates for various assumptions about the opacity-induced curvature. Finally, the asymmetries in the Ly-alpha emission line profile will be compared with those in high resolution C IV and C III] profiles measured optically, and interpreted in the context of models for the broad emission line region. Further physical constraints will be provided by emission lines with wavelengths shorter than Ly-alpha.
