One of the most surprising results that has come out of the study of nearby stars at UV and EUV wavelengths is the extremely low column density of neutral hydrogen along certain lines of sight. However, these investigations have mainly been carried out with stars located in the galactic plane. There is little information on the distribution of neutral interstellar gas in the solar vicinity at higher galactic latitudes, and nothing at all is known about the direction towards the South Galactic Pole. We therefore propose to probe the local interstellar space in that direction to determine the amount of neutral hydrogen in depth. We will use early and medium type stars along this line of sight to observe the strongest absorption lines: at UV wavelengths arising from abundant interstellar species, mainly MgII. From these data, HI column densities will be derived which should be at least one order of magnitude less than those observable in 21 cm-observations.
