The conversion of electrostatic upper hybrid waves into terrestrial myriametric radiation via linear mode coupling is considered. The efficiency of this conversion process is investigated by combining recent full-wave calculations with a new equation describing the evolution of the wave distribution function in a weakly inhomogeneous plasma. It is found that the efficiency of linear mode conversion is at least three orders of magnitude too low to account for the myriametric radiation observed in the magnetosphere.
