The paper briefly reviews the principal unsolved problems associated with magnetic field line reconnection in plasmas. Particular consideration is given to two reconnection mechanisms: (1) a slow diffusive process related to the tearing mode and field line stochasticity and (2) an Alfvenic flow with a fast merging rate (i.e., the so-called Petschek theory).
