The properties of low-mass binaries (e.g. frequency, mass ratios, and separations) can be directly compared to the predictions of various brown dwarf formation theories. Thus far, there are hints of substantial differences in the multiplicity properties of young objects in star forming regions (<10; Myr) and older field population brown dwarfs ( 5 Gyr). Both samples, however, are subject to selection effects and observational biases, which make direct comparisons to model predictions difficult. We have assembled a sample of 52 young ( Myr), nearby M and L spectral type objects for imaging with Keck/NIRC2 + Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics (LGSAO). Our survey will allow us to probe a new parameter space of binary properties. Because the nearby ultracool dwarfs in our sample are much younger than the 5 Gyr old field population, we are able to detect lower mass ratio systems, with companion masses as low as 2-20 Jupiter masses. We will also be able to resolve systems with tighter separations than can be found by surveys of young ultracool dwarfs in star forming regions (d>125; pc) because the objects in our sample (at 20 pc) are much closer. Here, we present the first results of our Keck LGSAO imaging survey of young, field ultracool dwarfs.
