The propagation of gravitational waves in the general homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann universe with negative curvature is studied. The covariant equations describing the wave propagation are found to imply that the ten purely gravitational wave-potentials must satisfy eight transversality conditions. These conditions uncouple the wave equations that govern the propagation, and all ten uncoupled equations are found to be identical with the one scalar telegraph equation. The dispersion term of the telegraph equation vanishes only in the universe whose equation of state has the proper pressure equal to one-third the proper density.
