Spectra in the vicinity of H alpha at a reciprocal dispersion of 42 A/mm were obtained at two locations within the filamentary structure south of the M82 galaxy, and it is found that the lines of H alpha and (N II) are split. Each line forms a complete hollow ellipse; this line structure has not previously been reported in extragalactic studies. These observations are considered irreconcilable with scattering models proposed to account for the luminous H alpha filaments radiating from the core of the galaxy in the direction of the minor axis. It is suggested that an expulsion hypothesis will be required to explain the velocity gradient within the filaments, even though the earlier discovery of the identical polarity of the emission lines had seemed to exclude this hypothesis.
