In the present paper, muon-generated showers with energies between 0.4 and 3 TeV, recorded in an ionization calorimeter, are analyzed to study the characteristics of the cascade curve and to detect short cascades. The contribution of the mean free path of a primary gamma-quantum to the fluctuation of the number of particles is assessed under the assumption that a cascade from an electron-positron pair does not fluctuate.
