The Roche limit for large plastic solid bodies near planets is found to differ from the classical Roche limit for liquid bodies. The extent of the difference depends on the diameter and the strength of the solid body. Craters on Mars are considered with reference to Sekiguchi's (1970) theory that twin craters would be produced from fragments of a solid body destroyed by the tidal forces of a nearby planet. Factors affecting the motion or orbiting of fragments from a destroyed body are discussed.
