An investigation of the He I L-alpha 584 A transfer problem of gaseous nebulae is presented. Realistic photoionization models of quasar clouds and planetary nebulae are combined with the Monte Carlo line transfer technique to determine the efficiency of destruction of lambda 584 by photoionization of hydrogen and the mean number of scatterings undergone before destruction. It was found that large fractions of the lambda photons are destroyed before escaping, but the He I (lambda)(lambda) 584, 626 doublet should be present in high redshift quasars with an observed equivalent width of about 1 A. Finally, it is shown that photoionization model calculations can assume nearly complete on-the-spot destruction of lambda 584.
