The definition of the equation of state and its role in stellar structure are discussed. With the example of the recently developed SAHA-S EOS, the principal features of an astrophysical EOS are illustrated. The phenomenon of sequential ionization of small impurities is described and numerically estimated for the heavy elements in the solar convection zone. The approach may be applied to the determination of the chemical composition based on the Γ1 profile.
