We examine the effects of neutrino oscillations with one dominant mass scale on the detection of atmospheric neutrinos in the Kamiokande experiment. We investigate the influence of oscillations on total electron and muon neutrino event rates and on the energy and angular dependence of the electrons and muons. We find that the observed μ-to-e ratio of 0.56 +/- 0.09 can be explained are favored over vμ --> ve by the agreement of the electron rate with expectations. The oscillation effects which agree with the observed rates occur nearly uniformly in lepton momentum and angle.
