Einstein gravity in (2 + 1)-dimensional spacetime is described with
point particle sources, using the loop variable approach. In this case
the equivalence between the loop space approach and the discrete Regge
description of general relativity is noted. A generalization to the (3 +
1)-dimensional spacetime describing a cosmic string is given.
