In this review, the authors present a history of the wave spectral measurements at the dayside magnetopause, including the most recent (and until now not published) AMPTE/IRM results. Then, they review surveys of the magnetopause plasma waves and discuss their implications for reconnection. Last, the authors review recent theoretical advances and discuss their implications for both reconnection and boundary-layer formation.
