The observational achievements at radio and infrared wavelengths since 1984 concerning the circumstellar envelopes of evolved stars are summarized. Knowledge of late stellar evolution during the asymptotic giant branch phase and the transition to the planetary nebula stage is discussed as well as the properties of gas/dust envelopes formed by stellar mass loss. New circumstellar molecules are considered as well as spectral scans, vibrationally excited lines, isotopic species, the time variability of thermal emission, and spatial structure.
