We consider quantum field theory of conformally invariant field in the presence of a shell in a curved two-dimensional space-time. The renormalized expectation value of the stress tensor due to the field is known to be discontinuous at the shell. A formula is found to express the magnitude of the discontinuity in terms of the discontinuity of the scalar curvature and the acceleration of the shell. It is used to evaluate the energy flux by the shell, which is then compared to that by a moving mirror. It also leads to a physically lucid expression for the stress tensor especially when the sell divides the space-time into static portions.
