Unanswered questions concerning the solar system are identified, and lines of investigation are suggested. One such question is how the energy of the solar wind is coupled into the magnetosphere and what controls the rate. A system of satellites in carefully coordinated orbits is projected for investigating the solar wind-magnetosphere interaction. In order to shed light on the relatively unstudied region of the atmosphere between 10 km and 100 km, the international Middle Atmosphere Program was called into being. It calls for use of all available platforms for in situ measurements and satellite surveys of the spatial distribution of various chemical species, temperature structure, winds, waves and tidal motions in the middle atmosphere. New information on the flare generation mechanism and on the three-dimensional structure of the solar wind is expected from the ESA/NASA Solar Polar Probe.
