The problem of geomagnetic reversals and their apparent link to other phenomena (such as faunal extinctions, ice ages, massive volcanism, and catastrophic overturns observed in lake waters) is approached by treating these reversals as a relative rather than an absolute effect. It is suggested that the problem may not be one of geomagnetic reversal after all, but rather one involving the geographic (precessional or nutational) reversal of the earth itself. It is shown that a wide variety of data are compatible with this hypothesis, not only from modern geological investigations but also from astronomy and ancient sources.
