The considered investigation has two objectives. One is related to the development of a formalism by which the stability of low-frequency modes, in inhomogeneous plasmas and two-dimensional equilibrium magnetic fields can be examined. Thus expressions for perturbed currents and particle densities are derived. The second objective is the application of this formalism to the linear stability of magnetospheric drift-compressional modes. Conditions are obtained for instability, expressions for growth rates, and a detailed description of the spatial structure of the eigenmodes. The stability of drift-compressional modes is analyzed in the fluidlike limit. The mode is found to have a strong instability for both the ion-drift and electron-drift branch.
