It is argued that the T Tau stage is due to an increase in the opacity of the outer layers of a star. These arguments suggest that the high luminosity state is the normal, inactive state of fuors. The T Tau stage differs from the high luminosity stage in that the superdense prestellar matter decays in the outer regions of the star, and there is a corresponding decrease in the luminosity due to the increase in the opacity. It is also suggested that the T Tau stage corresponds to the time in the evolution of a fuor when it crosses the gap.
