A variety of high frequency electromagnetic modes were observed in connection with the auroral kilometric radiation: extraordinary, ordinary, Z, and whistler mode. Large amplitude Langmuir, and Alfven waves are observed in the auroral region. The nonlinear decay process Langmuir to Whistler + Alfven is presented as a candidate to generate downward propagating auroral kilometric radiation along the auroral magnetic field lines, detected by satellites and rockets as well as on the ground level. Explicit expressions for the growth rate and threshold are obtained analytically. The relevance of this nonlinear wave-wave interaction process in the auroral plasma is discussed.
