Shear-wave polarization anisotropy in the upper mantle is investigated at the spatially dense seismic stations of the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention located in central Japan, by the use of the ScS wave of a deep earthquake which occurred beneath Sakhalin island on 12 May 1990. A characteristic pattern is found: small and large shear-wave anisotropy values are observed at seismic stations located on the east and west sides of the volcanic front, respectively.
