The principle limitation of the40Ar/39Ar dating method is the presence of calcium in the sample which produces interfering argon isotopes during neutron irradiation. The extent of interference on the potassium-argon age is primarily a function of the age and the calcium concentration.High calcium concentrations can be tolerated (30-40%) for samples with ages more than 1000 my, but for samples with ages of a few million years, significant errors are produced by less than 1% calcium. In addition, for young samples, interfering argon isotopes produced from potassium during neutron irradiation also give rise to errors. An expression is derived which eliminates the effects of the interfering isotopes, and an indication of the degree of interference is given. The relative amounts of argon isotopes, produced during irradiation, is also shown.
