Nickel-iron grains in anorthositic particles found in lunar soil from Mare Tranquilitatis contain 6 to 29% Ni. Similar metal grains in the more common Ti-rich basalts are nearly pure Fe. Either the anorthosites have been selectively contaminated by meteoritic metal, or Ni has been magmatically fractionated. If the anorthosites and basalts of Mare Tranquilitatis are related by magmatic fractionation, the process probably involved fractional crystallization followed by partial fusion of pyroxene-rich cumulates.
