We present an overview of the variety of observational data through which particle acceleration is manifested in solar flares. These data consist of direct energetic particle measurements, as well as radio, X-ray, gamma-ray and neutron observations, including new data from GAMMA-1, GRANAT and Compton GRO. We discuss the evidence showing the existence of impulsive and gradual solar particle events. We also discuss recent developments in acceleration theory and in the modelling of particle transport and interactions in solar flares.
