Recent studies of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (those above about 1017 eV), largely by Chi et al., are summarised. The case is made for anisotropies being present on a variety of scales and for the possible presence of discrete sources. It is argued that the composition is mixed - largely protons and iron with iron becoming increasingly important at the higher energies; however, above 1019 eV many of the particles appear to be extragalactic protons. Although some of the ideas are contentious it is felt that their chance of being true is sufficient to justify the construction of bigger extensive air shower arrays.
