A comparison between the characteristics of a free running and a frequency stabilized marginal oscillator is presented. It was studied the same marginal oscillator which acts as the voltage controlled oscillator in a PLL circuit, operating in two regimes: locked (frequency stabilized) and unlocked (free running). In order to simulate RF energy absorption an experimental circuit connecting periodically a resistive load to the marginal oscillator tank circuit was developed. The sensitivity and the noise level of the frequency stabilized marginal oscillator are evaluated.
