New evidence for the existence of water on Mars is discussed. The 'terrain softening' phenomenon detected from Viking photographs by Carr and Squyres above 30 degrees north and below 30 degrees south, is thought to be the result of ground ice creep. The existence of underground ice reservoirs would explain the Viking detection of water-eroded surface features, and the lack of surface water. Theoretical total water volume predictions are made difficult due to inconsistencies found by the Venus probes in the assumptions of the argon-to-water ratio hypothesis. The SNC meteorites, thought to be from Mars, indicate a history consistent with the present picture. A Valles Marineris analysis suggests the existence there of fairly large bodies of water a long time ago.
