The classification of a spectrum, which records the light intensity of a star at different wavelengths is described. The dense and upper layers of the gaseous surface of a star, the continuous radiation, and the formation of absorption lines are examined together with the classification method of Fraunhofer which is based on letters, and Secchi's scheme for five basic spectral types. The Harvard system which further defined Secchi's five basic spectral types is also examined. The classification of a spectrum by Morgan et al. (1943) to include six luminosity classes and spectral sequences is investigated and the development of a system which considers spectral sequence, luminosity, and chemical abundances in order to classify subdwarfs is presented.
